4 Clarks Yard - take a relaxing break in a 300-year-old fisherman's retreat.

Sample life in maritime Whitby with a stay at our 18th Century cottage situated centrally for all amenities, yet tucked away in one of Whitby's famous "yards".  Just off Church Street, the ancient thoroughfare that leads to the foot of the 199 Steps, are many of these narrow pedestrian alleys with rows of terraced cottages constructed of stone or hand-made bricks.  Most are devoid of gardens but, thankfully, Clarks Yard is one of the few exceptions.  This authentic and original property offers accommodation over three floors, and sleeps up to 4 persons in two bedrooms.  It is strictly non-smoking (except in the garden) and accepts one well-behaved dog.

The first thing you'll notice when you walk through the door is how much character oozes from this period house.  Whether it's the exposed oak beams made from old ships' timbers, the winding staircases or the vertical rope handrails placed to guide you to the upper floors.

The ground floor combines a recently-modernised kitchen, breakfast bar and lounge in a single area.  Sink into the comfortable sofa and chairs after a day striding the North York Moors or just relaxing on the beach.  The Georgian "Adam grate" built into the ornamental fireplace provides an attractive focal point to the lounge.  Above it is a portrait of the famous Whitby lifeboat coxswain Henry Freeman - the sole survivor of a lifeboat disaster in February 1861, who lived with his wife and her mother in Clarks Yard.

Up the short "winder" staircase you'll find the spacious pine-panelled main bedroom with a comfortable timber-framed double bed.  Furnished with a pine chest, bookcase and dressing table, there's also room for a travel cot (you are welcome to bring your own).  Next to it is a newly-upgraded bathroom with a large two head shower.  Choose from a luxurious rainfall style head or a separate handset.

Go up the "winder" one further flight to discover the characterful twin bedroom in the eaves, with old pine furniture and both dormer and skylight windows.

Outside is a south facing garden with a table and chairs, where you can sip a glass of wine while chatting to the other holidaymakers and residents in this friendly but secluded yard.  Despite the peaceful ambience, you are only seconds away from the hustle and bustle of cobbled Church Street.  One well-behaved dog is welcome, for a modest fee.

PLEASE NOTE : This property features very steep and narrow winding staircases (part of its historic appeal), so may not be suitable for young children or persons with limited mobility.
